Nutritional Ketosis Tools

Posted on January 17, 2013January 7, 2016 by BJJ Caveman

For anyone who is getting started nutritional ketosis or interested in how I track everything, I figure I would write a post showing all the tools I use.  Something like this would have been helpful for me when I was just starting.

Precision xtra

Precision Xtra Blood Glucose and Ketone Meter: This is the system I use to track my daily fastingmorning blood ketones to determine if I am in the range of nutritional ketosis (0.5 mmol- 3.0 mmol).  I’ve gotten pretty good at predicting what my ketones will be the following morning based on my diet and activity level.  … Read More

Day 36 – Nutritional Ketosis

Posted on January 17, 2013October 10, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Day 36aWeight: 181.2
AM Ketones: 1.1
AM Blood Glucose: 83
Hours of Sleep: 7:11
Energy Level: Excellent
Physical Activity: Walk in the park.

This is my 10th day straight of being in nutritional ketosis it looks like my guess from last night was pretty on the mark.  I also had another slice of my cheese-mousse today with no GI problems, so it doesn’t look like I consumed the requisite amount of xylitol to elicit an intestina response.  1 slice ok… 2 slices not ok!

My diet was going splendidly today until I came across this beautiful roasted pork belly.  … Read More

Day 35 – Nutritional Ketosis

Posted on January 16, 2013October 10, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Day 35aWeight: 179.6
AM Ketones: 0.7
AM Blood Glucose: 90
Hours of Sleep: 7:11
Energy Level: Excellent
Physical Activity: BJJ

Ketones have come back down to Earth… I guess the good times couldn’t last!  I’m surprised by my blood sugar though, but one thing I forgot to track was that in the midst of making the blue berry cheesecake pictured, I was snacking on some blue-berries along the way and may have gone a little overboard.

Last night I was feeling ambitious and felt the urge to give in to my sweet tooth a bit so I went ahead and made (with help from my sister) a blue berry cheesecake according to a recipe suggested in “The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Performance.”  … Read More

Day 34 – Nutritional Ketosis

Posted on January 15, 2013October 10, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Day 34Weight: 180.6
AM Ketones: 1.7
AM Blood Glucose: 77
Hours of Sleep: 10:00
Energy Level: Excellent
Physical Activity: None

Just like I could tell that my ketones would be low yesterday from my blood glucose reading, today I could tell that I’d have good ketone numbers after seeing a blood glucose of less than 80.

Ate breakfast and lunch at home so my macros look pretty good.  Did well also when I ate out at a dinner party.  My legs are a little sore from the basketball so I figured it’d be good to rest a bit.… Read More

Nutritional Ketosis: Do Calories Matter?

Posted on January 14, 2013October 10, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

CaloriesOne of the main questions I had regarding nutritional ketosis is regarding the potential for weight gain despite rigid adherence to the high fat, low carb, and moderate protein model recommended by Volek and Phinney.  In my reading of both of their books, they write frequently of how nutritional ketosis promotes fat burning and subsequently weight loss and body recomposition, and the benefits of ketoadaptation for athletes.

But they never really satisfactorily answer the question of whether or not you can actually gain weight from nutritional ketosis and exactly how important overall caloric intake is in weight loss vs weight gain.… Read More

Day 33 – Nutritional Ketosis

Posted on January 14, 2013October 10, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Day 33aWeight: 181.8
AM Ketones: 0.5
AM Blood Glucose: 87
Hours of Sleep: 7:54
Energy Level: Excellent
Physical Activity: Basketball

I could tell my ketones were going to be pretty low the moment I saw my glucose numbers.  I do both tests at the same time, but since the ketone test takes a full 10 seconds and the blood glucose test takes 2-3 seconds, I always see the glucose results first.  I’ve noticed that when my sugars are greater than 85, I can expect a low ketone number.… Read More
