Day 32 – Nutritional Ketosis

Posted on January 13, 2013October 10, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Day 32aWeight: 182
AM Ketones: 0.8
AM Blood Glucose: 80
Hours of Sleep: 6:39
Energy Level: Good
Physical Activity: None

We are currently traveling for 2 weeks, with the first couple days spent attending a professional conference.  As predicted my AM ketones suffered a drop and my weight a slight gain, after my Chinese food last night.  The weight change doesn’t bother me since I’ve converted to using a travel scale for this trip. Yes, I went out and bought a travel scale that I can bring around with me in order to continue tracking my numbers.  … Read More

Day 31 – Nutritional Ketosis

Posted on January 12, 2013October 10, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Day 31aWeight: 180.4
AM Ketones: 1.6
AM Blood Glucose: 77
Hours of Sleep: 6:52
Energy Level: Good
Physical Activity: None

Further progress with the ketones corresponding to lower fasting sugars.  All good news.

The bad news is that I ate at a Chinese restaurant for a family dinner.  Chinese food is notoriously non-paleo and non-ketosis friendly so I’m a little worried as to what will happen tomorrow.  I guess that’s what happens when you eat out… you subject yourself to the unknown and most likely unhealthy.

I did my best by eating a spinach dish and a stir-fried beef dish and avoiding all rice and visible starches and sugars… however all the non-visible stuff couldn’t be avoided.  … Read More

How does exercise affect my blood ketone levels?

Posted on January 12, 2013October 10, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Day 18After 2 weeks of diligently measuring my AM fasting blood ketones and despite being in nutritional ketosis (blood ketones between 0.5 mmol – 3.0 mmol) I didn’t notice any weight loss. While I was confident that I was ketoadapted (the state in which your body preferentially metabolizes fat for fuel instead of carbs), I was a frustrated because I couldn’t quite figure out a pattern to my ketone measurements.

For example, one morning it measured 0.2 mmol, followed by 1.1 mmol the next morning, only to fall back to 0.4 mmol the morning after.… Read More

Day 30 – Nutritional Ketosis

Posted on January 11, 2013October 10, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Day 30aWeight: 180.6
AM Ketones: 1.1
AM Blood Glucose: 85
Hours of Sleep: 6:27
Energy Level: Excellent!
Physical Activity: BJJ

I seem to have made a nice ketone jump, which also corresponds to a bit of weight loss (probably remaining water retention from my new years bender since this is what my weight was before New Years). It’ll be interesting to see if this continues.

Just off the top of my head, potential causes for this jump from low level ketones to 1+ mmol include:

  • My body has shifted its cellular machinery and has shifted gears to metabolize more ketones
  • I have finally worked through any remaining excess glycogen (goes hand in hand with above)
  • Or, this may be related to the workout I had yesterday (kettlebells, jump rope, and burpees).

Day 29 – Nutritional Ketosis

Posted on January 10, 2013October 10, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Day 29aWeight: 182.4
AM Ketones: 0.6
AM Blood Glucose: 80
Hours of Sleep: 7:30
Energy Level: Excellent!
Physical Activity: 60 lb kettlebell swings, burpees, and jump rope.

No change in ketones.  Still barely in nutritional ketosis.  Weight is slowly coming down.  Probably a result of further water loss as I burn through more glycogen and my caloric deficit.

I was interested to see if having such a high percentage of my diet yesterday come from fat (91%) would push me deeper into ketosis.  Guess not!  Since I’ve been eating more greens these past few days and Day 29bskipping the vegetables with higher carb contents (like carrots) I’ve been able to keep my carb intake to less than 30 gm yesterday and today.… Read More

Why I stopped checking blood ketones in the PM

Posted on January 9, 2013October 10, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

photoAfter a little over two weeks of checking both AM and PM blood ketones, I found that my evening numbers didn’t correlate with my AM numbers.

The primary culprit I suspected was how close in time my last meal was with respect to the time I was checking my PM numbers.

Including transit times, we know it takes around 2 hours to digest simple carbohydrates from the time they hit your mouth to the time the last bit has entered your blood stream (that’s why they ask diabetics to check 2 hour post prandial blood sugars).… Read More
