Day 57 – Nutritional Ketosis

Posted on February 6, 2013October 10, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Day 57aWeight: 177.6
AM Ketones: 0.4
AM Blood Glucose: 83
Hours of Sleep: 6:26
Energy Level: Good
Physical Activity: Crossfit and IFAST
Nutritional Ketosis Streak: 0

Not quite sure what happened to my ketones.  My glucose was in the low 80s and that usually coincides with a pretty good ketone level, but today it wasn’t the case.  Can’t really offer any explanation except for the fact that the ketone number can be a fickle son-of-a-gun.  Killed my 2 day streak of being in nutritional ketosis.Day 57b

Had an excellent workout today at Crossfit.  … Read More

Day 56 – Nutritional Ketosis

Posted on February 5, 2013October 10, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Day 56aWeight: 177.2
AM Ketones: 0.6
AM Blood Glucose: 87
Hours of Sleep: 6:13
Energy Level: Good
Physical Activity: IFAST
Nutritional Ketosis Streak: 2

Another new low for weight.  Though with the drop in ketones, I don’t think I can even hazard a guess.  It might have to do with the fact that I had less sleep than usual -> cortisol -> insulin -> lowered ketones.  At least I’m keeping my streak alive, day 2!

Hopefully tomorrow will bring new lows in weight.

Macros were good today, and the overall calorie intake was pretty low.  … Read More

Day 55 – Nutritional Ketosis

Posted on February 4, 2013October 10, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Day 55Weight: 177.6
AM Ketones: 1.2
AM Blood Glucose: 80
Hours of Sleep: 6:29
Energy Level: Good
Physical Activity: Incline walking
Nutritional Ketosis Streak: 1

Another new low in my weight!  Also I’m not sure how to explain the jump in ketones.  It probably reflects mainly my increased fat intake and decreased carbs yesterday.  I don’t really think my light activity actually had much effect… but who knows.. maybe it did.

Macros today weren’t too different.  Had more Oxtail broth!

Did some incline walking today which I think should have a greater effect than what I did yesterday.  … Read More

Good news and bad news this morning.  The bad news was that my ketones dropped below 0.5 mmol… meaning I fell out of ketosis and broke my streak of 27 consecutive days.  … Read More

Choke Artist

Posted on February 3, 2013January 31, 2013 by BJJ Caveman

Talk about “putting someone to sleep.”  The best applications of the “baseball choke” I’ve ever seen!  Going to try to incorporate this into my arsenal.

Interesting physiology note… when you elevate both legs like they did at the end of the second video to wake that guy up, it’s equivalent to injecting 500 ml of fluid into your body (it’s essentially allowing all the blood in your legs to go to the your brain which brings in more oxygen to help wake you up).… Read More

If it’s good enough for Kobe Bryant..

Posted on February 3, 2013October 10, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Saw this link from Mark’s Daily Apple…

Looks like the Lakers and Kobe are moving more towards a high fat, low carb diet.

“Pasture-fed foods – pasture-grazed beef from a pasture-fed cow, eggs from a free-range chicken (not a cage chicken) – are just some of the main staples of Bryant’s diet. Sugars, specifically anything with corn syrup, should be avoided, and the intake of carbohydrates has been scaled down, consumed in moderation.

“What happens is the athlete consumes one of these products high in carbohydrates and sugar, they get a spike of energy and feel really good,” Vitti said.
