Box Jumps and Achilles – Not Aging Gracefully

Posted on January 18, 2014October 9, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Box-JumpGiven my recent finger fracture, I’ve been trying to stay active by doing some weightlifting and Crossfitting with an emphasis on activities that don’t require too much use of my fingers.

Well, in my most recent workout the WOD included a series of 20 box jumps for time.  I felt great at the time… even though the workout killed me, but the day after I felt some soreness in my right achilles.

Ever since what happened to Kobe Bryant… the NBAs must durable athlete, I’ve been hyper-aware of achilles issues.… Read More

Carb Night Cholesterol

Cyclic Ketogenic Diet and Cholesterol

Brief Summary:

Recently I completed a 10 week experiment doing a variation of a cyclic ketogenic diet called the Carb Nite Solution, which basically entails eating strict low carb (less than 30 gm per day) with one 6-8 hr window of massive carb loading per week.  At the end of this experiment, before going on a trip to Italy, I had a series of fasting labs drawn.

So far we’ve looked at my:

  • Vitamin D
  • Testosterone
  • Markers of glucose control: HbA1c, Fructosamine, Fasting Insulin
  • Thyroid Hormone

It’s time to go into my cholesterol numbers.  … Read More

Minor Setback

Posted on January 9, 2014October 9, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

2014-01-03 00.17.04Prior to leaving for Italy, I suffered a minor setback by fracturing my left index finger while training in BJJ.  It was just a freak accident.  We weren’t going hard.  We weren’t uncontrolled.  I just planted my hand, shifted my weight, and felt a ‘pop’ in my hand.

Since I was still able to flex it, I simply taped it up and continued to train.  I knew something was wrong when my hand didn’t have any strength and I couldn’t grip anything with vigor.  I thought, at worst it was just a sprained ligament or strained tendon, but later on in the day it swelled up massively and I couldn’t move it at all.… Read More

I’d now like to explore my thyroid hormone levels (if you want to learn more about the basics of thyroid physiology I go into it briefly in one of my earlier posts).… Read More

Cyclic Ketogenic Diet and Testosterone Levels

Posted on January 2, 2014October 9, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

testosteroneAt the end of my Carb Nite Solution experiment, which is a type of cyclic ketogenic diet, right before we went to Italy, I obtained a panel of labs which I plan doing a series of posts about.

I most recently wrote about my low Vitamin D levels.

Before going into my testosterone while following this cyclic ketogenic diet, here are some basics from my previous testosterone results when I was solely doing nutritional ketosis:

The best resource I found actually came from a website called, “The Art of Manliness.”  … Read More
