Happy New Year

Posted on December 31, 2013October 9, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

ID-100219856It’s been a little over a year since I first started this blog and I feel like I’ve come quite a long way.

While I can’t say that I’ve reached the body composition goals that I set for myself, I can say that I’ve definitely learned a lot.

I intend to continue with more self experiments in 2014.  I know that some of these experiments will work and some will fail and some will simply be inconclusive.  That’s just the nature of experimentation, but through the whole process, you just try to come out with more information than you had going in.… Read More

Cyclic Ketogenic Diet and Vitamin D Levels

Posted on December 30, 2013July 16, 2017 by BJJ Caveman

Day 40cAt the end of my Carb Night Solution experiment, which is a type of cyclic ketogenic diet, right before we went to Italy, I obtained a panel of labs which I plan doing a series of posts about.

My Vitamin D levels are what I’d like to talk about first, but before we get into my results, here is a little background.

Basics of Vitamin D

  • It is a hormone derived from cholesterol
  • It can be made in the skin with exposure to sunlight
  • It can also be ingested with food or supplementation

Effects of Vitamin D

  • Maintains calcium levels in body which is important for bone health
  • Regulates gene expression
  • Helps immune function
  • May provide anti-cancer effects
  • Vitamin D levels need to be in the 50 -70 ng/mL range for thyroid hormone receptors to respond properly
  • Low Vitamin D levels are seen in obesity, although I’m not entirely sure if it’s known whether obesity causes low vitamin D levels, or if it’s the other way around.

The Colosseum was definitely one of the places I was most excited to visit.  This was the site of a lot of my favorite movies growing up.

Needless to say, I was inspired to re-watch some of them that same evening.

Ketosis and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Posted on December 20, 2013October 9, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Took a 2+ hour train ride from Milan to Venice today and I passed part of the time by listening to podcasts.  Episode 209 from Robb Wolf’s The Paleo Solution caught my attention because he talked about his experience with BJJ and ketosis.  It said things along the lines of:

  • He tried a ketosis experiment for 12 weeks
  • Discovered he could chug along just fine in BJJ, but when he needed explosiveness, it just wasn’t there for him
  • He wasn’t as tired at the end of training sessions, but just couldn’t tap into the next level when he needed.
