Could This Freak Injury Have Been Prevented?

Posted on June 19, 2015June 19, 2015 by BJJ Caveman

As a musculoskeletal radiologist I diagnose knee injuries and ACL tears on a daily basis.  I’m used to seeing these as grays-scale images on our back-lit medical grade computer monitors, but today I saw an injury happen right before my eyes.

Traffic was light today, and made it to my brazilian jiu-jitsu class early.  Whenever this happens I take the opportunity to get in a little extra stretching and maybe work on some techniques with some of my teammates.

When I was stretching out, I noticed a new person awkwardly standing by themselves against the wall. … Read More

Free Online Screening of Dave Asprey’s Documentary, “Moldy”

Moldy

The Bulletproof Exec, Dave Asprey, is currently offering a free screening of his documentary on mold appropriately titled, “Moldy.”

The topic of mold is very near and dear to his heart and figures prominently in his whole sickly geek turned super bio-hacker narrative.  He attributes a lot of his early health problems including brain fog and obesity to prolonged exposure to hidden mold.

In fact the the main marketing point of his special Upgraded coffee beans is that they are ‘mycotoxin free,’ as opposed to all the other coffee beans out there that are supposedly contaminated up the wazoo.… Read More

Sports Injuries – What Would a Doctor Do?

Sports Injuries What would a doctor do

The BJJ Cavewife told me about a discussion she recently had with some of her friends.

In the past few weeks, as the BJJ Cavewife has increased her training volume she’s suffered a few minor injuries.  Nothing serious, just a few tweaks here and there which is pretty much par for the course when doing any athletic activity, especially a martial art like Brazilian jiu-jitsu. By the way I know just how lucky I am to be married to someone who also loves to train!

When she told her friends about her injuries, they immediately expressed their concern and told her to see an orthopedic surgeon.… Read More

Jimmy Moore Summer 2015

Jimmy Moore, author of the books Cholesterol Clarity and Keto Clarity (both of which I’ve reviewed here and here), and champion of all things keto just posted his most recent health test results and and even shared his personal consultation with Christopher Kelly, a Certified Functional Diagnostic Practitioner where they discussed the results.

Jimmy last shared his health tests this past fall and I had a few thoughts on his results then.  I know Jimmy gets a lot of hate online, but say what you will, the guy is as open as a book. … Read More

How I Finally Fixed My Sleep Issues as a Shift Worker

Posted on May 11, 2015July 30, 2017 by BJJ Caveman

Shift Work Sleep Issues 1

I’ve been working as a shift worker since August 2012.  At first I worked a second shift, which began at 1pm and ended at 10 or 11 pm.  This meant that by the time I got home and showered, I didn’t get to bed until around 2-3 am.  I actually found that I didn’t have too much trouble adjusting to this schedule, since it was almost like being back in college!

After a year, my schedule was changed to an overnight shift.  I worked either 7pm to 7 am or 4pm to 4 am. … Read More
