How to Eat Like the Rock

Posted on March 21, 2016March 15, 2016 by BJJ Caveman

the rock1

A good friend of mine sent me this FiveThirtyEight article about what happened to an average Joe, Mark Webster, who tried to eat like the Rock for a month.  He works at a desk all day (like yours truly) and was inspired after reading an article.

I’ve been a peripheral fan of the Rock ever since my college days, but was never a die hard fanboy (like I am with Marcelo) so I’d never taken it upon myself to do any outside reading on him.… Read More

Gum Disease and Alzheimer’s

The BBC reported on a study that found a link between gum disease and Alzheimer’s which was surprising to me at first, but then not so surprising when I thought about it more.

I’ve been seeing more and more articles lately suggesting that low grade infections may be the underlying cause for Alzheimer’s and that the plaques that are diagnostic of Alzheimer’s are simply a result of the body’s attempt to fend off the infection rather than the cause of dementia.

Here’s one such article describing this.… Read More

Kobe Bryant’s Recovery Regimen

Kobe 1

Growing up in Southern California, the Lakers were my favorite basketball team.  I didn’t really start watching until after the ‘Magic and Kareem’ years, when the Lakers weren’t really contending.  Then Kobe joined the team and Shaq joined the team and Phil Jackson started coaching, and things became exciting.

Whenever I played pickup hoops with my friends I imagined I was Kobe and tried to do his acrobatic shots.  Of course I couldn’t come anywhere close to dunking and would get ludicrously winded running from one side of the court to the other… but that didn’t stop my imagination.… Read More

The Benefits of Productive Failure

THE GAP by Ira Glass from Daniel Sax on Vimeo.

Lifehacker linked to a great article, Productive Failure: How to Keep Going When You Feel Like Your Work Sucks, which inspired me to write a post.

Every so often I’ll get an e-mail from a reader telling me that they’re thinking about starting their own website and I try to encourage them as much as possible.  Most of the time when I followup with them they don’t follow through and I remember how I felt when I first started my website.… Read More

Stimulating Stem Cells from Supplements?

StemCells

One of the things the BJJ Cavewife makes fun of me the most about is how gullible I am.  I’m pretty much a marketers dream because I fall for all of their tricks.

For example, when Taco Bell releases a new product (I have a soft spot in my heart for Taco Bell), I immediately want it.  Even though it’s all pretty much the same formula: some sort of hard or soft tortilla with some sort of indeterminate meat product in the middle.  And still, whenever I see their commercials and posters, I think to myself, I NEED THAT IN MY LIFE NOW!… Read More

Can Meditation Gadgets Really Help?

Meditation Gadgets

The Wall Street Journal published an interesting article in the Technology section about meditation gadgets last month.  The author who is a technology editor describes his experience with trying to aid his meditation with biofeedback devices.

He writes briefly about the NeuroSky MindWave device ($99) and the Emotiv Insight device ($659), but settles on the Muse Headband ($249) which he says offers the ‘most pleasant experience.’

Incidentally, this is the same headband that I have (check out my review here).

It took him a while to get used to it but one he did:

…it didn’t take long for me to notice a greater sense of awareness spilling over into everyday life.
