Day 39 – Nutritional Ketosis

Posted on January 20, 2013October 10, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Day 39aWeight: 179.6
AM Ketones: 0.6
AM Blood Glucose: 88
Hours of Sleep: 6:00
Energy Level: Good
Physical Activity: Swim in the ocean, walk on the beach

My sleep was so short and thus my energy level was down because we had to wake up early for another flight.  My travels have now taken me to Hawaii.  I noticed that my appetite suppression was still in effect since I didn’t start to get hungry until about 6-7 hours after breakfast.  I still haven’t quite gotten to that point where I could forget to eat a meal and accidentally enter into a state of intermittent fasting.  … Read More

Yes, that is another plate of Chinese food.  This time we asked them to hold all corn starch which they were willing to do, so hopefully everything I ate was ok.  Another update into the saga of my blueberry mousse… was that I discovered that it also shouldn’t be eaten alone.  The first and thing I ate this morning was a slice of the mousse and about 45 minutes, the GI issues ensued again.  … Read More

Side Control Series with Rigan Machado

Posted on January 18, 2013January 21, 2013 by BJJ Caveman

Rigan MachadoRigan Machado is an expert in all things BJJ and especially side control.  He knows how to use his weight…. all 260 lbs and likes to illustrate this by saying, “Come here…. so you can feel.”  Then he shows you what all 260 lbs feels like and it gets hard to move and even harder to breathe.  When you try to hip escape or turn onto your side, techniques that occasionally work on people that aren’t 8th degree black belt masters, you go nowhere and lose even more air until you just want to tap out… and that’s before he’s even tried a submission.… Read More

Feedback from black belt Chris Torres

Posted on January 18, 2013January 21, 2013 by BJJ Caveman

Chris TorresHere are some great pearls I picked up form rolling with black belt Chris Torres today in Rigan Machado’s academy.

  • I’m athletic (first time in my life I’ve ever been called this) but rely too much on my athleticism and trying to muscle my way into and out of things.
  • I have a good base
  • I’m still not using my whole body together.  It’s sometimes there but most of the time I’m not using my upper and lower body in conjunction.
  • When in turtle, get the f—- out of there right away, don’t just settle there.

Day 37 aWeight: 180.6
AM Ketones: 0.9
AM Blood Glucose: 88
Hours of Sleep: 8:11
Energy Level: Excellent
Physical Activity: BJJ

Looks like another spot on ketone prediction from last night.  The fact that I can get pretty close to predicting my ketone measurements actually tells me that I have a reasonable understanding of how the things I do affect it.  My rough measurement includes how well I ate in terms of my macro breakdown and whether or not I had an intense exercise session.

Since I had a pretty intense BJJ session tonight and I ate close to ideally, I’ll predict tomorrow’s measurement to be around 1.5 mmol.… Read More

Nutritional Ketosis Tools

Posted on January 17, 2013January 7, 2016 by BJJ Caveman

For anyone who is getting started nutritional ketosis or interested in how I track everything, I figure I would write a post showing all the tools I use.  Something like this would have been helpful for me when I was just starting.

Precision xtra

Precision Xtra Blood Glucose and Ketone Meter: This is the system I use to track my daily fastingmorning blood ketones to determine if I am in the range of nutritional ketosis (0.5 mmol- 3.0 mmol).  I’ve gotten pretty good at predicting what my ketones will be the following morning based on my diet and activity level.  … Read More
