Why I stopped checking blood ketones in the PM

Posted on January 9, 2013October 10, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

photoAfter a little over two weeks of checking both AM and PM blood ketones, I found that my evening numbers didn’t correlate with my AM numbers.

The primary culprit I suspected was how close in time my last meal was with respect to the time I was checking my PM numbers.

Including transit times, we know it takes around 2 hours to digest simple carbohydrates from the time they hit your mouth to the time the last bit has entered your blood stream (that’s why they ask diabetics to check 2 hour post prandial blood sugars).… Read More

Day 28 – Nutritional Ketosis

Posted on January 9, 2013October 10, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Day 28 aWeight: 182.8
AM Ketones: 0.6
AM Blood Glucose: 82
Hours of Sleep: 6:31
Energy Level: Good
Physical Activity: None

Nice step wise progression of my ketone levels.  I guess I didn’t do enough to meet my prediction of 0.7 mmol.  Still good to be in nutritional ketosis though.  My diet today went a little overboard in terms of the fats as you can see!  Over 200 gm of fat!

Day 28 b

I wonder what this will do to my ketones tomorrow.  I’ve maintained a caloric deficit these past few days too so I expect to see the weight to start dropping off soon.  … Read More

Day 27 – Nutritional Ketosis

Posted on January 8, 2013October 10, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Day 27aWeight: 183.2
AM Ketones: 0.5
AM Blood Glucose: 84
Hours of Sleep: 7:00
Energy Level: Fantastic!
Physical Activity: Tabata x1 of 60 lb kettlebell swings and burpees.

Finally!  Nutritional ketosis!  I was only a little bit off with my prediction last nite.  Glad to see that I was able to get back into nutritional ketosis after only a few days.  That means my cells are still adapted to metabolize ketones, they just needed to work through whatever carbs and glycogen I had left.

My workout today wasn’t too impressive.  … Read More

Day 26 Nutritional Ketosis

Posted on January 7, 2013October 10, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Day 26aWeight: 182.8
AM Ketones: 0.4
AM Blood Glucose: 79
Hours of Sleep: 7:05
Energy Level: Fantastic!
Physical Activity: None

Looks like I was pretty spot on with my prediction for my ketone levels.  0.4 mmol is knocking on the door of nutritional ketosis.  I blame the chilli for keeping me out (it tasted pretty good though).

My fasting blood sugar is also coming down into the 70s which also makes me think that my body is primed to go back into ketosis.

Here’s a look at my macronutrient break down.  … Read More

Uchi Mata and Guard Pass

Posted on January 6, 2013 by BJJ Caveman

Rio ProWent to good group class this morning where we went over the Uchi Mata as well as a standing guard pass.

The standing guard pass had the following sequence:

1. Start in partners closed guard with posture established.
2. Right hand holding their lapels with a stiff arm and left hand holding onto his pants at the level of his right hip with left elbow at his right thigh.
3. Step the right foot forward so it is standing near his trunk.
4. Then step the left foot up and establish good posture.… Read More

Day 25 – Nutritional Ketosis

Posted on January 6, 2013October 10, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Day 25Weight: 184.0
AM Ketones: 0.3
AM Blood Glucose: 89
Hours of Sleep: 6:38
Energy Level: Good!
Physical Activity: BJJ

As I suspected from last night, given my falling off the wagon during my trip to NYC, I was definitely out of the nutritional ketosis range of my blood ketones.

To further support this was the fact that my fasting blood sugar, while in the normal range, is still higher than the 70-80s it stayed stable at when I am in ketosis.

After my BJJ workout today, I felt the typical bonk I normally get when I’m hypoglycemic, manifested with an irresistible urge to nap and a throbbing headache.  … Read More
