Day 11 – Nutritional Ketosis

Posted on December 24, 2012January 8, 2017 by BJJ Caveman

Weight: 179
AM Ketones: 0.8
PM Ketones: 0.2
AM Blood Glucose: 80
PM Blood Glucose: 91
Hours of Sleep: 6:23
Energy Level: Poor
Physical Activity: BJJ

Overall pretty bad day.  The 6:23 hours of sleep I got was completely disrupted and I woke up feeling like I only had 4 or 5 hours.  I’m pretty sure this doesn’t so much have as much to do with my diet as it does my new sleeping environment over here on the west coast.

Started the day with BJJ… and ended it at a holiday party where things were eaten that probably weren’t the best for this diet.  … Read More

Day 10 – Nutritional Ketosis

Weight: 179
AM Ketones: 0.8
PM Ketones: 0.5
AM Blood Glucose: 84
PM Blood Glucose: 90
Hours of Sleep: 7:59
Energy Level: Poor
Physical Activity: None

Reviewed the book I’ve been reading, “The Art and Science of Low Carb Performance” and came across something that I didn’t quite sink in the first time.  The fact that consuming medium chain triglycerides (MCTs), the kind that I put in my “fat hot chocolate” (grass fed butter and coconut oil), are actually absorbed by the gut pretty quickly, and are processed right away, either being used by muscle cells as fuel or to be converted by the liver into ketones.… Read More

What are Ketones?

Posted on December 22, 2012January 8, 2017 by BJJ Caveman

Since I started this blog, I’ve been meaning to provide some background on the diet I’m experimenting with, so here is a good a place to start as any.

We all know what fat is, at least what it looks like on the outside.  It’s the cause of beer bellies, love handles, and cellulite.  We’ve all seen the stats now in the news saying how obesity is becoming an epidemic, with the world population getting fatter and fatter.

The purpose of fat isn’t to cause you problems.  … Read More

Double Leg Guard Pass

Posted on December 21, 2012January 8, 2017 by BJJ Caveman

Great class today.  Still training in the same academy in Southern California, Babalu’s Iron Gym.  We went over a double leg guard pass series today.

1. Start in partners closed guard with posture broken and his hands holding the back of my head down.

2. Place both hands on his abdomen, open my left knee out, turn my head to the left to get some breathing room, and then push with both hands, and at same time try to retract head back and up, in order to release head.… Read More

Day 9 – Nutritional Ketosis

Posted on December 21, 2012January 8, 2017 by BJJ Caveman

Weight: 179
AM Ketones: 0.7
PM Ketones: 2.0
AM Blood Glucose: 87
PM Blood Glucose: 80
Hours of Sleep:
Energy Level: Good
Physical Activity: BJJ

Happy with my ketone levels and blood sugars.  Curious to see what my HbA1c will be with these sub 90 sugars.  I read somewhere that optimally blood sugars should be in the 80 range.  I’ll try to find that source again.

Had a Cold Stone creamery  ice cream today, the smallest size, because we were celebrating some good news, and I wasn’t sure what effect that would have to my ketones.  … Read More

Day 8 – Nutritional Ketosis

AM Ketones: 1.9
PM Ketones: 1.1
AM Blood Glucose: 77
PM Blood Glucose: 86
Hours of Sleep: 5:46
Energy Level: Poor
Physical Activity: None

Was tired all day.  Slept later than intended last nite because we were out with some friends, and for no reason in particular, my body woke me up at my normal time.  Hence the short amount of sleep.  Felt sleepy the entire day and took a few small naps.

Good ketone levels.  I was a little worried because we ate out today at Din Tai Fung… a chinese food place famous for its juicy pork dumplings.  … Read More
