How does exercise affect my blood ketone levels?

Posted on January 12, 2013October 10, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Day 18After 2 weeks of diligently measuring my AM fasting blood ketones and despite being in nutritional ketosis (blood ketones between 0.5 mmol – 3.0 mmol) I didn’t notice any weight loss. While I was confident that I was ketoadapted (the state in which your body preferentially metabolizes fat for fuel instead of carbs), I was a frustrated because I couldn’t quite figure out a pattern to my ketone measurements.

For example, one morning it measured 0.2 mmol, followed by 1.1 mmol the next morning, only to fall back to 0.4 mmol the morning after.… Read More

Day 24 – Nutritional Ketosis

Posted on January 5, 2013October 10, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Day 24Weight:
AM Ketones:
AM Blood Glucose: 93
Hours of Sleep: 9:24
Energy Level: Excellent!
Physical Activity: BJJ

Had a perfect ketogenic diet today.  Minimal carbs, medium amount of protein, and lots of fat!  This coupled along with my great BJJ session at Marcelo’s should hopefully get my body prepped to resume being in nutritional ketosis.

Unfortunately my ketone sticks were left with our leasing office rather than in my mailbox so I couldn’t check my ketones this evening.  Guess what the first thing I’m going to do tomorrow is?  … Read More

Day 21 – Nutritional Ketosis

Posted on January 2, 2013October 10, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Day 21Weight:
AM Ketones:
AM Blood Glucose:
Hours of Sleep: 7:17
Energy Level: Good
Physical Activity: Outlet Shopping

Still a little ‘affected’ by the effects of yester-year I completely forgot to check my AM fasting sugar before I ate something today… so not much data to report.

No scale where I’m staying either.

As you can see the first meal of the day was a burger and ice-cream (not pictured).  Not quite what Volek and Phinney had in mind.  Oh well, such is life!  The remainder of the day shaped up to be pretty good.… Read More

Day 19 – Nutritional Ketosis

Posted on December 31, 2012January 8, 2017 by BJJ Caveman

Day 19Weight: 179.6
AM Ketones: 2.0
AM Blood Glucose: 70
Hours of Sleep: 5:59
Energy Level: Excellent!
Physical Activity: None

Great to see my last ketone strip being put to good use.  A ketone level of 2.0 mmol is my 2nd highest level in all my AM measurements, and 3rd highest in my overall measurements.  Looks like the benefits of my Crossfit work out yesterday carried over to this morning, another sign that Crossfit is something I should continue.

What happens to my ketone levels after BJJ?

Posted on December 29, 2012January 8, 2017 by BJJ Caveman

BJJMy BJJ class with David Boehme, was scheduled for the morning today, so I couldn’t eat breakfast at my normal time.  Since I didn’t want to throw up or start burping in Dave’s face during the class, I decided to just go without eating anything.

With my prior experience  I knew that since I’m ketoadapted (my AM ketones today were 1.0 mmol), I wouldn’t bonk out from hypoglycemia, so I felt pretty comfortable going in a fasted state.

We had good training with some reviewing of techniques, position specific drilling, and some light rolling.  … Read More

Glad to see that I’m barely in the range for nutritional ketosis!  Today I wandered into the low carb friends forums and wrote a post asking people there what they thought of my results so far and if they had any ideas as to why my weight loss has seemed to stall and why I’m so inconsistent in staying in nutritional ketosis

They had some great ideas, the most valuable being: keeping better track of my intake… in terms of calories and macronutrient composition.  … Read More
