Ketogenic Diet with Dr. Dominic D’Agostino on the Fitness Nerds Podcast

Fitness Nerds Podcast with Dr. Dominic D’Agostino

  • Dr. D’Agostino was also recently on Kiefer’s Body IO podcast
  • It was interesting to hear that he is slowly being swayed by vegans around him and his pretty much cut out all meat from his diet except fish and insect protein
  • He also quoted a study that found that ketogenic diets can actually have a beneficial effect on the gut biome… which is not what Kiefer and Dave Asprey have been saying recently.  Hopefully more will come out about this
  • In response to people who are concerned with the effect a ketogenic diet on thyroid hormone like myself and Ben Greenfield (whom D’Agostino actually referenced), D’Agostino felt that thyroid issues only arise because people are eating too hypocaloric AND/OR are over-training.

As I was in the process of typing a response, it occurred to me make this a separate post because my answer was getting longer than I expected, and I figured that other folks may have similar questions.

Hi,

This question is probably not related to article. But I wanted to get your attention and hence this question on your latest post. Thanks for all the awesome detailed info. It really helps people. I read the effect ketosis had on your thyroid. I havent started on this diet but doing my research before getting into it.

Cyclic Ketogenic Diet and Thyroid Hormone

Thyroid GlandCyclic Ketogenic Diet and Thyroid Hormone

Brief Summary:

Recently I completed a 10 week experiment doing a variation of a cyclic ketogenic diet called the Carb Nite Solution, which basically entails eating strict low carb (less than 30 gm per day) with one 6-8 hr window of massive carb loading per week.  At the end of this experiment, before going on a trip to Italy, I had a series of fasting labs drawn.

So far we’ve looked at my:

  • Vitamin D
  • Testosterone
  • Markers of glucose control: HbA1c, Fructosamine, Fasting Insulin

I’d now like to explore my thyroid hormone levels (if you want to learn more about the basics of thyroid physiology I go into it briefly in one of my earlier posts).… Read More

Book Review: The Carb Nite Solution By John Kiefer

Carb Night Solution

The Carb Nite Solution: The Physicist’s Guide to Power Dieting

I first came across this author while listening to Jimmy Moore’s Ask the Low Carb Experts Podcast and then a few days later on Robb Wolf’s Podcast.

What John Kiefer had to say about the ketogenic diet and how he found the best way to optimize it for fat loss was very interesting, so I took the plunge and picked up his book.

Since amazon doesn’t offer a kindle version, I actually picked up the e-book version of it directly from his website.… Read More

The Effect of a Ketogenic Diet on Cholesterol Part 5

Posted on October 13, 2013October 9, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Cholesterol 4b

As you know, the past couple of months have been a bit of a whirlwind. During this time I wasn’t trying too hard to eat low carb… unlike the militant way I was counting carbs during my initial n=1 experiment.  I know there were a some weeks when I was definitely eating very low carb and spent at least a few of those days in ketosis (I hadn’t been testing my blood ketones these past few months), and there were other days when my carb intake increased due to social situations as well as my desire to avoid the keto-rash: prurigo pigmentosa.… Read More

Low Carb and High Cholesterol from Around the Web

Posted on July 31, 2013July 30, 2017 by BJJ Caveman

Great article by Mark Sisson of Mark’s Daily Apple, a blog I follow daily, discussing potential reasons for elevated LDL in people who eat Primal (a paleo low carb variation).  Potential explanations include:

  • Weight Loss
  • Micronutrient deficiency
  • Grazing all day
  • Activity levels that don’t match carb intake
  • Not moving frequently at a slow pace
  • Not lifting heavy things

An interesting point is his description of the role iodine and thyroid hormone plays in the expression of LDL receptors and subsequently LDL-C which pretty much is in line with everything I’ve been reading about.… Read More
