Keto Clarity – Book Review

Posted on November 12, 2014November 13, 2016 by BJJ Caveman

BJJ Caveman Keto Clarity Book Review DISCLOSURE: I’ve said this a few times before, but I’ll say it again.  While I don’t know him personally, I like Jimmy Moore.  He’s been a supporter of my site and has personally answered every single tweet and e-mail I’ve sent him.  He was also the inspiration behind my ketogenic n=1 experiments.  I pretty much just copied his n=1 nutritional ketosis experiment when I first read about it. If you’ve been following me at all you’ll know that I’m a big fan of ketogenic diets and have experimented with the different variations:

  • strict ketogenic diet (Nutritional Ketosis)
  • cyclic ketogenic diet (Carb Nite)
  • targeted ketogenic diet (Carb Back-Loading)

After all of these experiments, I can say confidently that I’ve learned a lot more about everything ketogenic.  … Read More

Book Review: The Carb Nite Solution By John Kiefer

Carb Night Solution

The Carb Nite Solution: The Physicist’s Guide to Power Dieting

I first came across this author while listening to Jimmy Moore’s Ask the Low Carb Experts Podcast and then a few days later on Robb Wolf’s Podcast.

What John Kiefer had to say about the ketogenic diet and how he found the best way to optimize it for fat loss was very interesting, so I took the plunge and picked up his book.

Since amazon doesn’t offer a kindle version, I actually picked up the e-book version of it directly from his website.… Read More

Cholesterol Clarity: What The HDL Is Wrong With My Numbers? by Jimmy Moore – Review

Cholesterol Clarity

Cholesterol Clarity: What The HDL Is Wrong With My Numbers?

This was a book I’ve been looking forward to, especially since it was Jimmy’s own n=1 experiments that inspired me to get off my butt and begin my own n=1 experiments.  I was also eager to see what he had to say regarding the phenomenon of elevated LDL on a low carb diet that many of us seem to be experiencing.

Jimmy is upfront right away about his lack of credentials and gives credit to all the experts he’s consulted for his information.  … Read More

Low Carb and High Cholesterol from Around the Web

Posted on July 31, 2013July 30, 2017 by BJJ Caveman

Great article by Mark Sisson of Mark’s Daily Apple, a blog I follow daily, discussing potential reasons for elevated LDL in people who eat Primal (a paleo low carb variation).  Potential explanations include:

  • Weight Loss
  • Micronutrient deficiency
  • Grazing all day
  • Activity levels that don’t match carb intake
  • Not moving frequently at a slow pace
  • Not lifting heavy things

An interesting point is his description of the role iodine and thyroid hormone plays in the expression of LDL receptors and subsequently LDL-C which pretty much is in line with everything I’ve been reading about.… Read More

First 60 Days of Nutritional Ketosis

Posted on February 20, 2013February 18, 2015 by BJJ Caveman

BJJI officially started my n=1 experiment on nutritional ketosis on 12/12/2012 (you can read about why I started it here), and I wanted to write a summary about my experiences and what I’ve learned after completing my first 60 days.

60 days weight

I weighed 180.0 lbs on day 1, 12/12/2012 and on day 60, I weighed 179.2 lbs, for a loss of 0.8 lbs!  I know, not very impressive but I do feel that my body composition improved over all.  I started receiving more compliments from people who thought that I lost more weight, and I noticed that my body started having a little more definition.  … Read More

Why I Decided To Try Nutritional Ketosis

Posted on February 18, 2013October 9, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

PerformanceI’ve always been on the heavier side and struggling with my weight was the norm for me.  While I wouldn’t have called myself morbidly obese or anything, I would say that I was doughy with a good amount of ‘spare tire’ and ‘love handles’ with an estimated body fat percentage of around 30%.  I am 5’9″ and at my heaviest weighed around 215 lbs.  I managed to lower my weight to around 200 lbs using a lot of caloric restriction which left me hungry and unsatisfied most of the time.  … Read More
