Maui Jiu Jitsu

Posted on January 22, 2013 by BJJ Caveman

MauiJJAfter snorkeling and swimming this morning we had to run some errands, one of which was near a BJJ school I visited a while ago, so I figure I’d drop in again for a class.  Maui Jiu Jitsu is owned by Luis Heredia, a Rickson Gracie black belt (5th degree).  I had the privilege of training with him for a class before and really looked forward to working with him again, but unfortunately he wasn’t at the class today.

The warmup was a typical run around the mat doing various motions (side stepping, high knees, heel kicks etc), followed by front and back rolls and some ab work.  … Read More

Feedback from black belt Chris Torres

Posted on January 18, 2013January 21, 2013 by BJJ Caveman

Chris TorresHere are some great pearls I picked up form rolling with black belt Chris Torres today in Rigan Machado’s academy.

  • I’m athletic (first time in my life I’ve ever been called this) but rely too much on my athleticism and trying to muscle my way into and out of things.
  • I have a good base
  • I’m still not using my whole body together.  It’s sometimes there but most of the time I’m not using my upper and lower body in conjunction.
  • When in turtle, get the f—- out of there right away, don’t just settle there.

Open Guard Pass

Posted on January 16, 2013 by BJJ Caveman

Back in California, so I got to revisit Babalu’s gym for another great training session.  I attended the class at 11 am (I prefer midday because it seems like there are less students and thus more individual attention) taught by Professor Pedro Munoz (black belt).

We went over an open guard pass, that involved using knee penetration as the primary tool.

Open Guard Pass Set Up

1. Start with opponent on his back in open guard.
2. Step right foot forward between his legs
3. Left hand underhand grips his right ankle (for better control as opposed to grabbing pant leg) and right hand grabs his left lapel (at a very low level, almost at belt line)

What happens to my ketone levels after BJJ?

Posted on December 29, 2012January 8, 2017 by BJJ Caveman

BJJMy BJJ class with David Boehme, was scheduled for the morning today, so I couldn’t eat breakfast at my normal time.  Since I didn’t want to throw up or start burping in Dave’s face during the class, I decided to just go without eating anything.

With my prior experience  I knew that since I’m ketoadapted (my AM ketones today were 1.0 mmol), I wouldn’t bonk out from hypoglycemia, so I felt pretty comfortable going in a fasted state.

We had good training with some reviewing of techniques, position specific drilling, and some light rolling.  … Read More

David Boehme

Posted on December 29, 2012January 8, 2017 by BJJ Caveman

Dave BoehmeThis is one of the instructors I’ve been working with, David Boehme, a brown belt who trained under Megaton.

He is a super nice guy and always willing to help.  It’s good to train with him because he knows when to go hard and go soft, so that I’m not always being smashed and can actually walk away learning something.

He’s also around my height and my size which also facilitates the learning process.

Today we reviewed escapes from mount and side control.  … Read More

Double Leg Guard Pass

Posted on December 21, 2012January 8, 2017 by BJJ Caveman

Great class today.  Still training in the same academy in Southern California, Babalu’s Iron Gym.  We went over a double leg guard pass series today.

1. Start in partners closed guard with posture broken and his hands holding the back of my head down.

2. Place both hands on his abdomen, open my left knee out, turn my head to the left to get some breathing room, and then push with both hands, and at same time try to retract head back and up, in order to release head.… Read More
