I was organizing the contacts in my cell phone a few weeks ago and came across the contact info for my first BJJ instructor, Mauricio Costa. I first met him over 10 years ago when I first became interested in BJJ. At the time he was a brown belt under Rickson Gracie, who at the time, and probably currently still is the most respected and skilled Gracie practicioner. In the BJJ community he’s regarded almost mythically and conferred a god-like status, with a reported undefeated record of over 400 – 0. … Read More

Out of Gas
Attended a group class at Rio Pro today and during the live training was completely gassed! During my matches, I would do well and slowly advance my positioning and eventually catch someone in a submission, but then be completely gassed afterwards. My legs were just tired, and after we fist bumped to restart, I found myself unable to resist their attacks. When stuck in bottom of side control I just didn’t have it in me to bump up to create space and recover guard. I was just out of gas and my legs wouldn’t do what I wanted them to. … Read More
Day 57 – Nutritional Ketosis
Weight: 177.6
AM Ketones: 0.4
AM Blood Glucose: 83
Hours of Sleep: 6:26
Energy Level: Good
Physical Activity: Crossfit and IFAST
Nutritional Ketosis Streak: 0
Not quite sure what happened to my ketones. My glucose was in the low 80s and that usually coincides with a pretty good ketone level, but today it wasn’t the case. Can’t really offer any explanation except for the fact that the ketone number can be a fickle son-of-a-gun. Killed my 2 day streak of being in nutritional ketosis.
Had an excellent workout today at Crossfit. … Read More
Choke Artist
Talk about “putting someone to sleep.” The best applications of the “baseball choke” I’ve ever seen! Going to try to incorporate this into my arsenal.
Interesting physiology note… when you elevate both legs like they did at the end of the second video to wake that guy up, it’s equivalent to injecting 500 ml of fluid into your body (it’s essentially allowing all the blood in your legs to go to the your brain which brings in more oxygen to help wake you up).… Read More
If it’s good enough for Kobe Bryant..
Saw this link from Mark’s Daily Apple…
Looks like the Lakers and Kobe are moving more towards a high fat, low carb diet.
… Read More“Pasture-fed foods – pasture-grazed beef from a pasture-fed cow, eggs from a free-range chicken (not a cage chicken) – are just some of the main staples of Bryant’s diet. Sugars, specifically anything with corn syrup, should be avoided, and the intake of carbohydrates has been scaled down, consumed in moderation.
“What happens is the athlete consumes one of these products high in carbohydrates and sugar, they get a spike of energy and feel really good,” Vitti said.
High Guard Sequence Continued to Omo Plata
In class with Dave today we continued the lesson on the high guard sequence we’ve been working on. We reviewed how to establish the triangle.
Triangles have always been hard for me to apply because I have short stubby legs, and for some reason my calf is always against he back of my opponents leg and feels like its getting crushed, no matter how deep I have the lock in or what angle my body is. I’m starting to conclude that my body is just not made for triangles.… Read More
