Nutritional Ketosis and Testosterone

Posted on March 25, 2013December 5, 2016 by BJJ Caveman

Man and his shadow #1One of my favorite blogs to follow is Mark’s Daily Apple, and when I came across this post, one of the letters really caught my attention.  One of his reader’s was wondering about his “gynoid” pattern of fat deposition.  A gynoid pattern is when there is increased fat in the hips, buttocks, and thighs as compared to an “android” pattern where the fat is increased in the chest and belly.  Here is part of Mark Sisson’s response:

“…For you, a male with a more “feminine” pattern of fat deposition, I would suspect low testosterone levels.

What Happens When I Try To Cut My Protein Intake Out of Ketone Envy?

Posted on March 2, 2013February 18, 2015 by BJJ Caveman

Day 56aDespite making good progress and seeing new lows in weight and body circumference I still had some ketone envy seeing how other consistently have ketones greater than 2.0 mmol/L and even upwards of 3.0 or 4.0 mmol/L!  I’m not sure how accurate or inaccurate this is, but in my mind I equate a greater ketone number to more fat burning.

I’ve been following the blog of Dr. Georgia Ede who has been doing her own n=1 experiment with nutritional ketosis.  One of the things she observed is that when her protein intake was around 75-80 gm/day her blood ketones consistently stayed around 1.0-1.4 mmol/L.  … Read More

Days 69-78 – Nutritional Ketosis

Posted on February 27, 2013October 9, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Day 69Hit the ground running these past 10 days and spent 8 out of the 10 days in ketosis.  I’m currently on a ketosis streak of 5 days, which probably would have been longer had I not fallen off the wagon again and succumbed to the siren song of Georgetown Cupcakes, which our friends generously gave to us.  One thing I’ve discovered is that my will power can be pretty strong, and I can resist the urge to buy food…. but when it’s given to me… and it’s free, or rather didn’t cost me anything, I can’t seem to resist.… Read More

Days 61-68 – Nutritional Ketosis

Posted on February 23, 2013October 9, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

utahI spent this week in Park City, Utah snowboarding with a good friend of mine.  I was interested to see how nutritional ketosis affected my performance on the slopes!  I’d characterize my self as a beginning intermediate level snowboarder.  I can heel and toe edge on the board pretty comfortably but I still get nervous at high speeds and I don’t do any jumps or tricks.  I’m content just going up and down and taking in the scenery.  Until this trip, I hadn’t boarded in about 2 years so I was definitely rusty.… Read More

Out of Gas

Posted on February 9, 2013October 9, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Rio ProAttended a group class at Rio Pro today and during the live training was completely gassed!  During my matches, I would do well and slowly advance my positioning and eventually catch someone in a submission, but then be completely gassed afterwards.  My legs were just tired, and after we fist bumped to restart, I found myself unable to resist their attacks.  When stuck in bottom of side control I just didn’t have it in me to bump up to create space and recover guard.  I was just out of gas and my legs wouldn’t do what I wanted them to.  … Read More

Day 59 – Nutritional Ketosis

Posted on February 8, 2013October 9, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Day 59aWeight: 179.6
AM Ketones: 0.6
AM Blood Glucose: 85
Hours of Sleep: 6:59
Energy Level: Excellent
Physical Activity: Crossfit
Nutritional Ketosis Streak: 2

Still off in my predictions…BUT at least I’m still in ketosis.  Let’s see how long I can keep this streak alive!  Despite recording everything I eat meticulously, I’ve been lazy in recording what I drink.  It typically doesn’t vary much, but includes 1 cup of coffee, a few cups of green tea, and some water.  Recently I’ve been drinking 1-2 bottles of Vitamin Water Zero, just for a change in flavor… and I can’t help but wonder if there’s an ingredient in there that is screwing up my ketones.  … Read More
