Training with Renato Babalu Sobral Before Metamoris

Posted on March 24, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Babalu 3I showed up at Babalu’s Iron Gym for one of their open mats a little over a week before the Metamoris 3 event in which he’s scheduled to fight Dean Lister, and I was lucky enough to have had the chance to roll with him again.

Compared to before, he’s really trimmed down.  When I last trained with him he had retired from MMA for a couple of months already and looked like he put on some weight.  This time he was trim and looked like he was in fantastic shape.… Read More

Metamoris 3

Posted on March 23, 2014March 23, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Getting pretty excited for the upcoming Metamoris 3 on March 29.  It’s the 3rd iteration of the Ralek Gracie run submission only Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu event.  The main draw of the event are a series of super-fights between hand selected BJJ practitioners.  As opposed to typical BJJ tournaments that can incentivize stalling after gaining a point or advantage, there are no advantages and no points.  The only outcomes are submission or draw with a 20 minute time limit.  They also award cash prizes for submissions to further incentivize an attack mentality.… Read More

What Stronglifts 5×5 Failure Looks Like

Posted on March 21, 2014October 9, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Mehdi, the guy behind the Stronglifts 5×5 program that I’ve been using shared this video of what it looked like when he failed his squat sets.

I know the feeling.  As I’ve gotten higher and higher in weight with the various movements, I’ve encountered failure more and more.  It only makes sense, because the body’s capacity to deal with progressive increases in weight is finite.

The Stronglifts 5×5 protocol for dealing with failure is to try again with the same weight during the next session.  If you fail again, you still try one more time the following session. … Read More

Bulletproof Travel Mug Review

BP Travel Mug 1Bulletproof Travel Mug Review

I know that I’ve mentioned in the past that I’m a big fan of Dave Asprey, The Bulletproof Exec, so when he came out with this travel mug I was pretty excited.

His whole thing is that he only recommends products that he personally believes in and uses, in fact he stakes his reputation on it.  If he can’t find a product that meets his requirements, then he goes ahead and manufactures it himself at a quality that meets his specifications.

Because he is so anal about the quality of his products and has such stringent requirements, he charges a premium for his products.… Read More

Ketonix Review

Ketonix

Ketonix Review

I picked up the Ketonix Acetone Breathalyzer a little over a month ago and have been playing with it ever since.  I wanted to know how accurate it was in detecting ketosis compared to the current gold standard, which are blood levels of beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA). I purchased this device directly from the source at www.ketonix.com based out of Sweden. The system I use to test my blood levels of BHOB is the Precision Xtra Blood Glucose and Ketone Meter (if you want to find out where to pick up strips for this you can check out this post).… Read More

Carb Back-Loading Results After 4 Weeks

CBLCarb Back-Loading Results After 4 Weeks

Carb Back-Loading (CBL) is John Kiefer’s variation on a targeted ketogenic diet in which a large load of carbs are only eaten after heavy resistance training (optimally in the afternoon).  This theoretically takes advantage of the body’s hormonal and metabolic response to stimulate muscle cell growth while at the same time increasing the breakdown of fat cells.  You can read more about the basics of this approach from my review of the book.

OBJECTIVE:

Burn fat while increasing muscle mass and strength.… Read More
