Review: Ketonix Acetone Breathalyzer – Initial Impressions

Review: Ketonix Acetone Breathalyzer – Initial Impressions

Just added a new tool to my arsenal.  This new toy was the reason I started looking into the whole ketosis and false positive on alcohol breathalyzer things in the first place.

I first came across this as I was wandering around the reddit/keto page where some folks were discussing this contraption.

The general idea behind why the ketonix would be helpful is this:

  • When entering ketosis, we are encouraging the body to utilize fat as fuel rather than carbohydrate (glycogen and glucose)
  • Fat is broken down into three main ketone bodies which the body then uses for energy
    • Beta-hydroxybutyrate: This is what is detected with blood ketone strips
    • Acetoacetate – This is what is detected with the urine ketone strips
    • Acetone – A break down product of acetoacetate which the body gets rid of via exhalation.

Stronglifts 5x5Stronglifts 5×5 – Initial Impressions

In my travels throughout the interwebs I’ve come across various methods purported to increase strength.  One of these is Body by Science, which many people who follow the Bulletproof Exec Dave Asprey report success with.  One of the main benefits is that you only need to train for 12 minutes, once a week.

This is definitely something I want to experiment with in the future… but not quite yet.

Since one of the requirements of my next experiment, Carb Back-Loading, requires resistance training multiple times per week I needed to find something else.… Read More

Book Review: Carb Back-Loading by John Kiefer

CBLBook Review: Carb Back-Loading by John Kiefer

When I picked up the Carb Nite Solution, I also purchased Kiefer’s Carb Back-Loading (CBL) book at the same time as part of a discounted package.  Kiefer has mentioned in a few different places that the Carb Nite Solution is mainly for folks who don’t work out too much, while Carb Back-Loading is for people who like to exercise, particularly with resistance training, more regularly.

Since I’ve been trying to integrate more regular weight training into my regimen lately I decided to read through the Carb Back-Loading book, and I have to say I really enjoyed it.… Read More

Epic Bars Review

I first heard about these through Mark’s Daily Apple when he offered them as a prize for one of his contents.

Since I’m on the road so often I was eager to try these out since they seemed like the perfect paleo snack.

Grass fed, gluten free, preservative free, antibiotic free, hormone free, low glycemic, dairy free, and low glycemic.  The ingredient lists are also filled with items that I recognize and can pronounce.

The company even lists ‘ketogenic’ on its website.  … Read More

Carb Night Solution

The Carb Nite Solution: The Physicist’s Guide to Power Dieting

I first came across this author while listening to Jimmy Moore’s Ask the Low Carb Experts Podcast and then a few days later on Robb Wolf’s Podcast.

What John Kiefer had to say about the ketogenic diet and how he found the best way to optimize it for fat loss was very interesting, so I took the plunge and picked up his book.

Since amazon doesn’t offer a kindle version, I actually picked up the e-book version of it directly from his website.… Read More

Primal Blueprint 1The Primal Blueprint: Reprogram your genes for effortless weight loss, vibrant health, and boundless energy

I’m not even sure where to begin in my review of this book except by saying two things:

This is the best health book I’ve ever read

And

I wish I had read this sooner

I’m a frequent visitor of Mark Sisson’s site, Mark’s Daily Apple.  In fact I’ve read every post starting from December 2012 when I first discovered his site, around the same time I started my own blog.… Read More
