Curcumin and Tendon Healing

Posted on December 23, 2015December 19, 2015 by BJJ Caveman

Curcumin

Curcumin 2

Rhonda Patrick PhD tweeted a link to this abstract for a study that examined the effects of curcumin on tendon healing in rats.  Since I was just working on a post that touched upon this subject, my curiosity was piqued, so I found the full paper.  The full title is:

Curcumin Improves Tendon Healing in Rats: a Histological, Biochemical, and Functional Evaluation.

It’s hot off the presses and was just published in the “International Journal of Connective Tissue Research” in November 2015.

They took a group of 64 rats and cut out a piece of their patellar tendon from their right knee.  … Read More

Dr. Volek’s Latest Research Paper – Metabolic characteristics of keto-adapted ultra-endurance runners

Posted on December 7, 2015May 9, 2017 by BJJ Caveman

FASTER 3

I was first turned on to this latest study by Dr. Volek after listening to one of Ben Greenfield’s podcasts where he talked about his participation in a groundbreaking study that required him to run 3 hrs straight on a treadmill while undergoing intermittent blood tests, metabolic tests, and muscle biopsies!

It sounded like an experimenters dream to me in terms of the data that could be collected (although it probably wasn’t that fun for those being experimented on).

The paper was finally published a few weeks ago in Metabolism.… Read More

Comparing Low Carb vs Ketogenic Diets

Posted on October 20, 2015 by BJJ Caveman

Low carb vs ketogenic

I came across this article via Bill Lagakos’ twitter feed titled, “Ketogenic low-carbohydrate diets have no metabolic advantage over nonketogenic low-carbohydrate diets,” published out of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2006.

In this study 20 overweight subjects were randomly placed on ketogenic or non ketogenic low carb diets for 6 weeks and had various biomarkers tested.

The macros of the ketogenic diets consisted of 60% fat, 30% protein, and 5% carbs as percentages of total energy requirement.  They started these guys off eating less than 20 gm carbs per day, something Kiefer would’ve been proud of.… Read More

Can Coffee Raise LDL?

Posted on December 15, 2014May 9, 2017 by BJJ Caveman

Can coffee raise LDL

I was listening to the podcast of Ben Greenfield (author of Beyond Training) and was finding everything somewhat interesting until I came across a specific segment where he links coffee to high LDL!  This was something I had never heard before.

You can listen to the podcast here.

And read the transcript here.

It all happens around the 38:10 mark.  The theory goes something like this:

Coffee contains ‘cafestol’ and ‘kahweol’ which are compounds called diterpenes.  These are found specifically in the oils of coffee beans.… Read More

Apo-E, Alcohol, and LDL Cholesterol – The Framingham Offspring Study

Framingham offspring

I first came across this study when I read about Steve Kirsch’s experience with drinking alcohol to lower his LDL cholesterol after finding out he has an Apo E2 allele.  I figured that it’d be a good idea for me to look at the actual study he referred to and was pleasantly surprised to discover that it was free to the public.

In the introduction the authors summarize what is currently known about the ApoE gene and how it relates to LDL cholesterol:

  • Apo E3/E3 constitutes the majority of the population.

Apolipoprotein E Super Brief Overview

Posted on December 4, 2014December 1, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

After reading Steve Kirsch, aka the Paleo Drummer, describe his experience decreasing his LDL by drinking alcohol after discovering his Apo E genotype, I’ve been trying to learn more about Apolipoprotein E.

Probably the best thing that I’ve come across is the pdf summary sheet provided by Atherotech, a company that runs the test.  You can find the pdf sheet itself here.

Apolipoprotein E

My interest lies mainly in the relationship between Apolipoprotein E and LDL status (given my elevation of all things LDL) as well as coronary vascular disease (CVD)
