Carb Back-Loading, Resistant Starch, and Cholesterol

BRM Potato StarchCarb Back-Loading, Resistant Starch, and Cholesterol

While continuing my Carb Back-Loading experiment (results at 4 weeks, results at 8 weeks), I was a bit disheartened after receiving my latest NMR cholesterol results.  Despite losing almost 5 lbs and 1.25 inches off my weight, while increasing the amounts I was lifting on Stronglifts 5×5, my LDL-P particles were still high (LDL-C was high as well).

I had heard a couple podcasts where Robb Wolf mentioned that he was able to get his cholesterol in check while using resistant starch and a few other reports I’ve seen around the internets of people with a smiliar response that I wanted to try it out again.… Read More

Carb Back-Loading and Cholesterol

After I reached the 8 week mark of my Carb Back-Loading experiment, I planned to draw a series of blood tests to see where things stood compared to my most recent set of labs which were drawn after doing Carb Nite for 10 weeks.

If you’ve been following my cholesterol adventures at all, you’ll know that I’ve been dealing with high cholesterol these past few years when I switched to various forms of high fat low carb diets.  More specifically my LDL-C and LDL-P have risen with my dietary changes and I’ve been trying to see what, if anything, I can do to get those numbers under control.… Read More

After I reached the 8 week mark of my Carb Back-Loading experiment, I planned to draw a series of blood tests to see where things stood compared to my most recent set of labs which were drawn after doing Carb Nite for 10 weeks.

Here is a brief summary I wrote in the early life of this blog regarding thyroid physiology:

  • Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) – This is the hormone your brain sends out telling your thyroid gland to produce more thyroid hormone.

Vitamin D Update

Natural Vitamin DVitamin D Update

After I reached the 8 week mark of my Carb Back-Loading experiment, I planned to draw a series of blood tests to see where things stood compared to my most recent set of labs which were drawn after doing Carb Nite for 10 weeks.

As a quick review, here are some of the basics of Vitamin D that I addressed in my prior post:

Basics of Vitamin D

  • It is a hormone derived from cholesterol
  • It can be made in the skin with exposure to sunlight
  • It can also be ingested with food or supplementation

Effects of Vitamin D

  • Maintains calcium levels in body which is important for bone health
  • Regulates gene expression
  • Helps immune function
  • May provide anti-cancer effects
  • Vitamin D levels need to be in the 50 -70 ng/mL range for thyroid hormone receptors to respond properly
  • Low Vitamin D levels are seen in obesity, although I’m not entirely sure if it’s known whether obesity causes low vitamin D levels, or if it’s the other way around.

Even Ben Greenfield Has Thyroid Problems While In Ketosis

In the span of a week or so, Ben Greenfield appeared on Dave Asprey’s Bulletproof Exec podcast AND John Kiefer’s Body IO FM podcast where he discusses his experience training for and performing in Iron Man races while in full nutritional ketosis.

He describes one of the main side effects that he encountered being severe hypothyroidism… manifesting as severe sensitivity to cold, poor libido, and poor overall energy.

The way they treated this was to eat a lot of liver, dessicated thyroid, and sweetbreads which seemed to fix things for him.… Read More

As I was in the process of typing a response, it occurred to me make this a separate post because my answer was getting longer than I expected, and I figured that other folks may have similar questions.
