Carb Night Solution

Carb Nite Solution Results After 10 Weeks

Here is the 10 week update from my experiment with the Carb Nite Solution (check out my book review), which is essentially a variation on a cyclic ketogenic diet.  The basic idea is to eat ultra low carb (less than 30 gm) to induce ketosis which primes your body to burn fat while preserving muscle.  Then on one day of the week, during a 6-8 hr window in the evening, load up on a massive amount of high glycemic index carbs.  … Read More

Days 61-68 – Nutritional Ketosis

Posted on February 23, 2013October 9, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

utahI spent this week in Park City, Utah snowboarding with a good friend of mine.  I was interested to see how nutritional ketosis affected my performance on the slopes!  I’d characterize my self as a beginning intermediate level snowboarder.  I can heel and toe edge on the board pretty comfortably but I still get nervous at high speeds and I don’t do any jumps or tricks.  I’m content just going up and down and taking in the scenery.  Until this trip, I hadn’t boarded in about 2 years so I was definitely rusty.… Read More

Why I Decided To Try Nutritional Ketosis

Posted on February 18, 2013October 9, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

PerformanceI’ve always been on the heavier side and struggling with my weight was the norm for me.  While I wouldn’t have called myself morbidly obese or anything, I would say that I was doughy with a good amount of ‘spare tire’ and ‘love handles’ with an estimated body fat percentage of around 30%.  I am 5’9″ and at my heaviest weighed around 215 lbs.  I managed to lower my weight to around 200 lbs using a lot of caloric restriction which left me hungry and unsatisfied most of the time.  … Read More

Out of Gas

Posted on February 9, 2013October 9, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Rio ProAttended a group class at Rio Pro today and during the live training was completely gassed!  During my matches, I would do well and slowly advance my positioning and eventually catch someone in a submission, but then be completely gassed afterwards.  My legs were just tired, and after we fist bumped to restart, I found myself unable to resist their attacks.  When stuck in bottom of side control I just didn’t have it in me to bump up to create space and recover guard.  I was just out of gas and my legs wouldn’t do what I wanted them to.  … Read More

Day 35 – Nutritional Ketosis

Posted on January 16, 2013October 10, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Day 35aWeight: 179.6
AM Ketones: 0.7
AM Blood Glucose: 90
Hours of Sleep: 7:11
Energy Level: Excellent
Physical Activity: BJJ

Ketones have come back down to Earth… I guess the good times couldn’t last!  I’m surprised by my blood sugar though, but one thing I forgot to track was that in the midst of making the blue berry cheesecake pictured, I was snacking on some blue-berries along the way and may have gone a little overboard.

Last night I was feeling ambitious and felt the urge to give in to my sweet tooth a bit so I went ahead and made (with help from my sister) a blue berry cheesecake according to a recipe suggested in “The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Performance.”  … Read More
