Could Apo-E genotyping and alcohol be the key to my high LDL Cholesterol? An online anecdote

Posted on November 19, 2014February 18, 2015 by BJJ Caveman

Cholesterol and Apo E

I’ve been trying to learn more about the relationship between low carb eating and a subsequent rise in both total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol and one of the more informative pieces I’ve come across was this  case discussion by Dr. Thomas Dayspring.

It’s important to note that while he’s a lipidologist with plenty of experience under his belt, the case discussion wasn’t a peer reviewed article or published in a journal.  There was also only one study that was cited which I’ve since downloaded and plan on reading.… Read More

Ketosis And High Cholesterol According to Dr. Thomas Dayspring

Ketosis and high cholesterol and Dr. Thomas Dayspring

In my search to learn more about what the heck the relationship is between ketosis and the stratospheric increases in both Total Cholesterol and LDL that seem to occur in so many people (myself included), I came across this case presentation and write up by Dr. Thomas Dayspring, who is a renowned lipidologist.

He was one of the experts in Jimmy Moore’s Cholesterol Clarity, and has appeared in a number of Jimmy’s podcasts (two of them are here and here).

I carefully went through this paper and did my best to digest, simplify, and summarize it… mainly for myself, but I figured I might as well share it with you guys too.… Read More

Does the new iOS 8 grayscale feature for the iPhone use blue light?

Posted on September 26, 2014October 9, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Grayscale IOS8The BJJ Cavewife and I recently updated our iPhones to the newly released operating system, iOS 8.  One of the features that I was excited to make use of was the ability to change the display to grayscale, eliminating all the colors except for black and white.

Since one of the main reasons to avoid electronic displays (TVs, iPhones, iPads, computers, etc.) before going to bed is because the blue light emitted from those displays trick your body into thinking that the sun is still out, and causes suppression of melatonin release (the main sleep hormone), I reasoned that if my display was only black and white, there wouldn’t be any blue light emitted to screw things up!… Read More

Adrenal Fatigue vs Brain Fatigue

Posted on September 22, 2014October 9, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Just watched this very interesting lecture by Nora Gedgaudas of Primal Body Primal Mind fame in which she explains that much of what the paleo community considers ‘adrenal fatigue’ is actually the result of central nervous system fatigue.  There are quite a few moving parts before we get to the point where the adrenals secrete cortisol:

  • Hypothalamus secretes corticotropin releasing hormone which stimulates the pituitary
  • Pituitary secretes adrenocorticotropic hormone which then stimulates the adrenal glands to release cortisol.

And a whole bunch of inflammatory cascades and feedback loops act on these parts of the brain, which then determine what the adrenals do!… Read More

Can Lipoic Acid Restore Circadian Rhythms?

  • For people who have been following me for a while, you know that I work a graveyard shift, so trying to improve my sleep and minimize disruption to my circadian rhythm is something I’ve been trying to tinker with (hence the sleep trackers)… so when I came across this headline, my interest was piqued.
  • This was also interesting to me because Alpha Lipoic Acid is one of the supplements Tim Ferriss recommends as part of the PAGG stack in his 4 Hour Body book.

Bulletproof Radio Podcast Q&A Notes

q-and-a-podcast-130-dave-asprey-300x300Bulletproof Radio Podcast Q&A Notes

These are some notes that I took from Dave Asprey’s most recent Q&A podcast.  You can listen to the full episode here and check out the entire transcript here.

This is by no means meant to be complete.  If you want the complete breakdown just go ahead and read through the transcript, although there are quite a few transcription errors (seems like they use either automated software or a foreign transcription service), so listening to the podcast will be more accurate.… Read More
