Cholesterol Update with Berberine, January 2017

Posted on April 10, 2017April 16, 2017 by BJJ Caveman

The last time I checked my cholesterol in September 2016 it showed a slight improvement in my LDL-P, LDL-C, and total cholesterol simply by following the Whole 30 diet for 2 weeks.  Despite these improvements, my small LDL-P remained elevated at 984 which was concerning.

As you can see with my cholesterol charts, I’ve been living with a high LDL-P for almost 4 years now which is far too long.

When the new year rolled around, I resolved to make 2017 the year that I finally get to the bottom of my cholesterol issues  and lay things to rest like I did with my HbA1c.… Read More

Cholesterol Update September 2016

hearthealth2016-09

It’s been about 6 months since I last checked my cholesterol and I’ve had a few readers ask me how my numbers look.  Before I jump into what the results are I thought it might be helpful, especially to new readers, to detail a little bit about where I’ve come from, and what I’ve been doing in the mean time.

I’ve written quite extensively on my cholesterol history and some of the research I’ve done on the subject throughout my blog.  Here’s a link to everything I’ve written on cholesterol thus far.… Read More

Dr. Hallberg LDL on LCHF Talk

Hallberg LDL on LCHF 1

I first came across Dr. Sarah Hallberg’s name when I read Dr. Pokrywka’s guest editorial in Lipid Spin discussing the “Worsening Lipoproteins on a Low-Carb Diet.”

Dr. Pokrywka pointed out that Dr. Hallberg is in the midst of a large study investigating the effect of a ketogenic diet vs standard American Diabetes Association diet on type 2 diabetics and prediabetics.  In this study she’s examining NMR lipoprofiles, carotid intima media thickness, and other metabolic markers

In the course of her investigations she’s noticed a sub-population of patients that, like myself, develop elevated LDL-P and cholesterol numbers despite an improvement in everything else.… Read More

Worsening Lipoproteins on a Low-Carb Diet: The National Lipid Association

Worsening Lipoproteins 1

Dr. Dayspring tweeted a link to Lipid Spin journal highlighting this article, and when I saw the title I knew I had to read it forthwith.

Lipid Spin is the official publication of the National Lipid Association and is, in my mind, a legit resource.

Here is the link to the issue from their site.

In case the link ever breaks (which I’ve discovered happens pretty frequently), I’ve taken the liberty of uploading it to my site, HERE.

While there isn’t anything groundbreaking, he does do a wonderful job of summarizing where we are currently.… Read More

Cholesterol Update March 2016: What happens after 6 weeks of VSL#3 Probiotics?

0818-News-Students risk

I had normal cholesterol, went low carb, and then ketogenic, and saw that my cholesterol started to go crazy.  I tried a host of things to bring it down including raising my carbs and taking various supplements to no effect.  I finally saw a lipidologist, did some more research, and came up with a 12 point gameplan which surprisingly worked!

I’m now in the process of peeling away parts of my gameplan to see what changes, if any happen to my cholesterol levels.

This past October I stopped taking bergamot and saw a  bump in my LDL-P. … Read More
