Uchi Mata and Guard Pass

Posted on January 6, 2013 by BJJ Caveman

Rio ProWent to good group class this morning where we went over the Uchi Mata as well as a standing guard pass.

The standing guard pass had the following sequence:

1. Start in partners closed guard with posture established.
2. Right hand holding their lapels with a stiff arm and left hand holding onto his pants at the level of his right hip with left elbow at his right thigh.
3. Step the right foot forward so it is standing near his trunk.
4. Then step the left foot up and establish good posture.… Read More

Day 25 – Nutritional Ketosis

Posted on January 6, 2013October 10, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Day 25Weight: 184.0
AM Ketones: 0.3
AM Blood Glucose: 89
Hours of Sleep: 6:38
Energy Level: Good!
Physical Activity: BJJ

As I suspected from last night, given my falling off the wagon during my trip to NYC, I was definitely out of the nutritional ketosis range of my blood ketones.

To further support this was the fact that my fasting blood sugar, while in the normal range, is still higher than the 70-80s it stayed stable at when I am in ketosis.

After my BJJ workout today, I felt the typical bonk I normally get when I’m hypoglycemic, manifested with an irresistible urge to nap and a throbbing headache.  … Read More

Day 24 – Nutritional Ketosis

Posted on January 5, 2013October 10, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Day 24Weight:
AM Ketones:
AM Blood Glucose: 93
Hours of Sleep: 9:24
Energy Level: Excellent!
Physical Activity: BJJ

Had a perfect ketogenic diet today.  Minimal carbs, medium amount of protein, and lots of fat!  This coupled along with my great BJJ session at Marcelo’s should hopefully get my body prepped to resume being in nutritional ketosis.

Unfortunately my ketone sticks were left with our leasing office rather than in my mailbox so I couldn’t check my ketones this evening.  Guess what the first thing I’m going to do tomorrow is?  … Read More

Marcelo Garcia’s New Academy – Part 2

Posted on January 4, 2013January 4, 2013 by BJJ Caveman

MG Part 2a Just got back from another great day of training in Marcelo Garcia’s new academy.  There were fewer people this time around.  I overheard some people saying that on opening night when I went, there were 70 people on the mats!  That’s pretty crazy.

Today I’d estimate about 40 students on the mats.  We started the class with a warmup session that includes running around the periphery of the mats with variations that include, skipping, jumping jacks, side to side, and running backwards.

One of my favorite parts of the warmup is when they incorporate an obstacle course that includes everyone at once, where you get to play the part of the obstacle and then of the person running through the obstacle.… Read More

Day 23 – Nutritional Ketosis

Posted on January 4, 2013October 10, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Day 23Weight:
AM Ketones:
AM Blood Glucose:
Hours of Sleep: 4:17
Energy Level: Fair
Physical Activity: Walking through the city.

Another day where I forgot to check my blood sugar this morning.  Being on vacation in a different location has really screwed up my normal routine.

Diet was another day of damage control.  Trying to stay on board with a few thing sneaking back in.  This will make my meeting with the ketone strips tomorrow very interesting.

Given my estimated carb intake over the past few days, I’m predicting my ketone levels to be around 0.2 mmol.  … Read More

Marcelo Garcia

Posted on January 3, 2013November 13, 2016 by BJJ Caveman

MG 3

Today was a very special day for me.  I got to train in Marcelo Garcia’s brand spanking new permanent academy on the first night they opened!  I was so lucky that their new academy opened during the week that I’m here in NYC.

Having the opportunity to train with the best BJJ practitioner in the world is my favorite reason for visiting NYC.  Food?  Meh.  Shopping?  Meh.  Clubbing?  Meh.  Training with Marcelo Garcia?  OMG OMG OMFG!!!!!  I’ve told people before who questioned my school-girl-like obsession with MG that having the opportunity to train with him would be like having the opportunity to shoot hoops with Michael Jordan at the peak of his powers.… Read More
