The BJJ Cavewife and a few of her friends are taking part in an online Superhero Unleashed challenge run by Emily Schromm whom we first encountered on one of Robb Wolf’s podcasts. Since many of the BJJ Cavewife’s friends are new to the whole paleo thing they had a lot of questions about some of the requirements in the challenge, namely the whole ‘no sugar’ and ‘no refined carbs’ thing. When the BJJ Cavewife couldn’t explain things well enough she turned to me and I wrote this post as way to help them out.… Read More

Carb Back-Loading Results After 4 Weeks
Carb Back-Loading (CBL) is John Kiefer’s variation on a targeted ketogenic diet in which a large load of carbs are only eaten after heavy resistance training (optimally in the afternoon). This theoretically takes advantage of the body’s hormonal and metabolic response to stimulate muscle cell growth while at the same time increasing the breakdown of fat cells. You can read more about the basics of this approach from my review of the book.
OBJECTIVE:
Burn fat while increasing muscle mass and strength.… Read More

Pearls
Listened to the most recent podcast with Kiefer on the Optimal Health Show with a fantastic summary of Carb Back-Loading and a great discussion on the science behind it with info that wasn’t included in the book itself.
Some of the pearls and nuggets dropped:
- When keeping insulin at low levels in the first half of the day, this activates the enzyme hormone sensitive lipase in fat cells which allows them to release more fat and deactivates the enzyme lipoprotein lipase which prevents fat cells from storing fat.

When I picked up the Carb Nite Solution, I also purchased Kiefer’s Carb Back-Loading (CBL) book at the same time as part of a discounted package. Kiefer has mentioned in a few different places that the Carb Nite Solution is mainly for folks who don’t work out too much, while Carb Back-Loading is for people who like to exercise, particularly with resistance training, more regularly.
Since I’ve been trying to integrate more regular weight training into my regimen lately I decided to read through the Carb Back-Loading book, and I have to say I really enjoyed it.… Read More
Low Carb and High Cholesterol from Around the Web
Great article by Mark Sisson of Mark’s Daily Apple, a blog I follow daily, discussing potential reasons for elevated LDL in people who eat Primal (a paleo low carb variation). Potential explanations include:
- Weight Loss
- Micronutrient deficiency
- Grazing all day
- Activity levels that don’t match carb intake
- Not moving frequently at a slow pace
- Not lifting heavy things
An interesting point is his description of the role iodine and thyroid hormone plays in the expression of LDL receptors and subsequently LDL-C which pretty much is in line with everything I’ve been reading about.… Read More
