Great Article on Ketogenic Diet and Increased Cholesterol

Just read a great post written by Franziska Spritzler, RD, a registered dietician who went on a ketogenic diet and also experienced a meteoric rise of her LDL-P.

From June 2013 to November 2013 she was eating around 50 gm carbs per day and these were her numbers:

  • 6/11/2013 – LDL-P: 1174, LDL-C: 124, Small LDL-P: 103
  • 11/2013 – LDL-C: 160

Then in January 2014 she experimented with further decreasing her carb intake to around 20 gm per day.… Read More

Carb Back-Loading, Resistant Starch, and Cholesterol

BRM Potato StarchCarb Back-Loading, Resistant Starch, and Cholesterol

While continuing my Carb Back-Loading experiment (results at 4 weeks, results at 8 weeks), I was a bit disheartened after receiving my latest NMR cholesterol results.  Despite losing almost 5 lbs and 1.25 inches off my weight, while increasing the amounts I was lifting on Stronglifts 5×5, my LDL-P particles were still high (LDL-C was high as well).

I had heard a couple podcasts where Robb Wolf mentioned that he was able to get his cholesterol in check while using resistant starch and a few other reports I’ve seen around the internets of people with a smiliar response that I wanted to try it out again.… Read More

CBL and CNSMore Carb Nite and Carb Back-Loading Tips Part 2

In an effort to stay on top of things despite so much travel, I’ve been doing my best to listen to all of my regular podcasts and taking notes when I hear things that are interesting.  Here is the second edition of my Kiefer notes.  Again some of these are from his own site, Body.io and some from when he appears as a guest on other podcasts.  For those that don’t know, Kiefer is the author of both The Carb Nite Solution and Carb Back-Loading, both ways of eating that I’ve been playing around with recently. … Read More

Limitless Human Potential

If you want to be inspired by the limitlessness of human potential please watch this video.  Not only is he better than me at BJJ, but he fricking summitted Mt. Kilimanjaro!

Every time I think I’m too tired to go in for some training or believe that some obstacle is too difficult for me, I need to remind myself that my mind is the only thing holding me back.  If Kyle Maynard can accomplish the things that he’s done, none of the ridiculous excuses I come up with should even be entertained.… Read More

Carb Back-Loading and Cholesterol

After I reached the 8 week mark of my Carb Back-Loading experiment, I planned to draw a series of blood tests to see where things stood compared to my most recent set of labs which were drawn after doing Carb Nite for 10 weeks.

If you’ve been following my cholesterol adventures at all, you’ll know that I’ve been dealing with high cholesterol these past few years when I switched to various forms of high fat low carb diets.  More specifically my LDL-C and LDL-P have risen with my dietary changes and I’ve been trying to see what, if anything, I can do to get those numbers under control.… Read More

Thyroid GlandCarb Back-Loading and Thyroid Hormone

After I reached the 8 week mark of my Carb Back-Loading experiment, I planned to draw a series of blood tests to see where things stood compared to my most recent set of labs which were drawn after doing Carb Nite for 10 weeks.

Here is a brief summary I wrote in the early life of this blog regarding thyroid physiology:

  • Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) – This is the hormone your brain sends out telling your thyroid gland to produce more thyroid hormone.
