Can you trust “fat free” and “sugar free” labels?

Posted on March 18, 2013October 9, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Things like this in which a bakery was found to have sugar and fat in it’s ‘sugar free’ and ‘fat free’ products make me more and more suspicious, especially with my own experience.  I’ve pretty much avoided anything that says ‘sugar free’ except for the occasional cough drop since many ‘sugar free’ things I’ve eaten in the past have inexplicably caused a rise in my blood sugar…  and what happened with the bakery may be the reason why.

I ignore anything that says ‘fat free’ because being on a ketotic diet means that I’m trying to INCREASE the amount of fat (healthy fats that is) that I consume.… Read More

Dwight Howard Has Cut Out All Sugar In His Diet…

Posted on March 11, 2013October 9, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Dwight Howardand now the Lakers have won 8 of their last 10 since the All Star Break and are in the 8th play off spot in the Western Conference… and all this happened after Dwight mentally recommitted himself to playing better and a big part of this had to do with:

…cutting sugar completely out of his diet so he could get into the kind of shape he needed to be in to be the Lakers’ defensive anchor and run coach Mike D’Antoni’s pick-and-roll sets

Coincidence?  … Read More

Mixed Data About Barefoot Running

Posted on March 8, 2013November 13, 2016 by BJJ Caveman

The NY Times reports on a study showing more injuries in people who run barefoot compared to those with shoes…

When Born to Run first came out, I went out immediately to pick up some Vibram Fivefingers because I was so excited to embrace my body’s natural state.  My first run was 3 miles.  My second run was 3 miles.  My third run was nonexistent because I had strained my calf.  Turns out I didn’t read the instructions for a proper adjustment period and subsequently injured myself.… Read More

Of Dragon Curves and Manuals: A Prelude

Posted on March 1, 2013October 9, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Before I go into my intended series discussing my lab results and the changes I did or didn’t observe, I wanted to offer this small prelude.

A few days ago, I was putzing around the house doing some internet surfing and light reading when I came across the video above.

Then almost immediately after, I was reading an article at the back of a Time magazine and read a line that really jumped out at me.  Even though it was written about a show I don’t watch and have never heard of, it just resonated with me:

“Enlightened” is about people trying to fix themselves without totally understanding the repair manual.

Wheat Germ Agglutinin

Cut bread

Great post yesterday on Rob Wolff’s blog about one of the other substances you get exposed to when you consume wheat products.  One line in particular caught my attention:

“…it increases glucose transport into fat and liver cells while blocking the ability of stored fat to be released.  This can make losing weight impossible and the fact that more glucose is getting brought to the liver; it can increase the amounts of triglycerides in our blood.   – See more at: http://robbwolf.com/blog/2013/02/28/wheat-germ-agglutinin/#comment-149808″

Panera’s Secret Low Carb Menu

Posted on February 25, 2013October 9, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

Friend of mine sent me this link a while ago detailing Panera’s secret bread-free menu.  It actually looks pretty good considering the restaurant that’s offering it.  My only concern is that there isn’t enough fat!  There’s a lot of lean cuts of meat and egg whites as protein sources.

I guess if you were forced to eat there this would be the best option…

The positive take home point is that they recognize there is a market for people who are low carb, which tells me that it’s becoming more and more main stream.… Read More
