Apo-E, Alcohol, and LDL Cholesterol – The Framingham Offspring Study

Posted on December 10, 2014June 15, 2015 by BJJ Caveman

Framingham offspring

I first came across this study when I read about Steve Kirsch’s experience with drinking alcohol to lower his LDL cholesterol after finding out he has an Apo E2 allele.  I figured that it’d be a good idea for me to look at the actual study he referred to and was pleasantly surprised to discover that it was free to the public.

In the introduction the authors summarize what is currently known about the ApoE gene and how it relates to LDL cholesterol:

  • Apo E3/E3 constitutes the majority of the population.

Apolipoprotein E Super Brief Overview

Posted on December 4, 2014December 1, 2014 by BJJ Caveman

After reading Steve Kirsch, aka the Paleo Drummer, describe his experience decreasing his LDL by drinking alcohol after discovering his Apo E genotype, I’ve been trying to learn more about Apolipoprotein E.

Probably the best thing that I’ve come across is the pdf summary sheet provided by Atherotech, a company that runs the test.  You can find the pdf sheet itself here.

Apolipoprotein E

My interest lies mainly in the relationship between Apolipoprotein E and LDL status (given my elevation of all things LDL) as well as coronary vascular disease (CVD)

Thoughts on Jimmy Moore’s Latest Health Test Results

Thoughts on Jimmy Moore's Latest Health Test Results

Jimmy Moore recently published his blood work obtained during the fall of 2014.  I’m truly appreciative of Jimmy’s willingness to publish information as honestly and transparently as possible, and I use him as a model for publishing my own data.

I’m particularly interested in Jimmy’s test results because like me, he too is someone who has developed stratospheric cholesterol levels while in ketosis.  This has been a topic of great interest to me lately for obvious personal reasons and I’m doing my best to find as much information on this little known subject as possible, most recently exploring the thoughts of Dr.… Read More

Cholesterol, CRP, Fasting Insulin, and HbA1c Update: October 2014

Cholesterol October 2014 Update

As you can probably tell with my recent spate of cholesterol focused posts exploring the thoughts of Dr. Dayspring as well as the role of Apo-E and alcohol in high cholesterol… cholesterol has been on my mind of late.

It’s been about 6 months since my last blood test and a lot has happened since then like:

  • Trying a Carb Nite / Carb Back-Loading experiment that sort of fell apart and ended up with me gaining weight.
  • Doing a bit of traveling to Germany and Croatia where I ate a lot of good carby gluten filled foods causing me to gain weight.

Could Apo-E genotyping and alcohol be the key to my high LDL Cholesterol? An online anecdote

Cholesterol and Apo E

I’ve been trying to learn more about the relationship between low carb eating and a subsequent rise in both total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol and one of the more informative pieces I’ve come across was this  case discussion by Dr. Thomas Dayspring.

It’s important to note that while he’s a lipidologist with plenty of experience under his belt, the case discussion wasn’t a peer reviewed article or published in a journal.  There was also only one study that was cited which I’ve since downloaded and plan on reading.… Read More

Ketosis And High Cholesterol According to Dr. Thomas Dayspring

Posted on November 17, 2014July 30, 2017 by BJJ Caveman

Ketosis and high cholesterol and Dr. Thomas Dayspring

In my search to learn more about what the heck the relationship is between ketosis and the stratospheric increases in both Total Cholesterol and LDL that seem to occur in so many people (myself included), I came across this case presentation and write up by Dr. Thomas Dayspring, who is a renowned lipidologist.

He was one of the experts in Jimmy Moore’s Cholesterol Clarity, and has appeared in a number of Jimmy’s podcasts (two of them are here and here).

I carefully went through this paper and did my best to digest, simplify, and summarize it… mainly for myself, but I figured I might as well share it with you guys too.… Read More
