Ushering in 2017

The New Year is right around the corner, and what better way to usher it in than with Jocko Willink’s take on New Years resolution:

Don’t make a New Years resolution to be a better person next year… Make a resolution to be a better person NOW…

That resolution of DISCIPLINE to work and follow through and maintain your will, that’ll result in the freedom that you’re looking for…

I’m currently spending the last few weeks of 2016 on the East Coast with the BJJ Cave-Inlaws and getting in a lot of great brazilian jiu-jitsu training in at the gym I used to train at here, Fifty/50 BJJ.… Read More

Don’t Let Your Health Be Your Blind Spot

The BJJ Cavewife received a call on her day off to see if she could go into work to cover her colleague who called in sick. Since she is a wonderful and thoughtful and considerate person she dropped all of her plans and went into work.

She only found out later that her colleague, a gentleman in his early 60s, suddenly developed chest pain the day before at work. He tried to ignore it and work through the pain, but he looked so terrible that the staff forced him to go to the hospital.… Read More

Thyroid Update September 2016

Since I haven’t checked my thyroid levels in over a year, I decided to add a thyroid panel onto my September 2016 blood test.  I can’t report any symptoms of either hyper or hypothyroidism so there really isn’t any real reason for me to check this except out of sheer curiosity… which is pretty much the entire purpose of this site.  I thought it’d be fun to see what changes, if any, the Whole 30 would have on these numbers.

Quick Review:

  • Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) – This is the hormone your brain sends out telling your thyroid gland to produce more thyroid hormone.

“…It’s the struggle.  It’s the daily test.  THAT’S what life’s about…”

A little over a year ago Jocko Willink, Navy Seal Commander and BJJ Blackbelt, started his podcast, and it immediately resonated with me in a way no other podcast has.  He’s released a podcast every week since and each episode is anywhere from an hour and a half to two hours… and I listen to and love every single second.  In fact, since his podcast has come onto the scene it’s pushed every other podcast in my queue to the bottom of the list.… Read More

Vitamin D Update September 2016

In my recent blood test from September I also checked my Vitamin D level.  Because my job involves working indoors, at a desk, in front of a computer for 10 hours a day, it’s rare for me to get much sun exposure.  Sometimes I’ll sneak out for a coffee run or something, but even then only my face and hands will be exposed since I typically wear a dress shirt, and the walk to the coffee shop only takes 5-10 minutes.  We’re talking minimal exposure at most.… Read More

Testosterone Update September 2016

Along with testing my cholesterol and HbA1c after 15 days of the Whole 30, I also checked my testosterone levels.  It’s something I’ve checked in the past maybe once a year just to get a sense as to where I stood.

Here are my prior posts:

Nutritional Ketosis and Testosterone
Cyclic Ketogenic and Testosterone
My Health Test Results from March 2015

I’ve tried to search for other good resrouces on testosterone testing and results, but haven’t found anything better than the Art of Manliness series I referred to in my first post.… Read More
