Virtual Reality Gaming – Another Reason to Stay in Shape

Virtual Reality Gaming

Growing up, videogames were a big part of my life.  Nintendo, Sega, Turbo Graphx, Playstation, and Xbox systems all took up residency in underneath a TV in my home at some point or another.  And let’s not forget about PC games.

In fact, the only point in my life where I’ve gone for a significant amount of time without a console system is NOW.  In our cross country move, after reading and applying the principles of Marie Kondo’s, “Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up,“I jettisoned all of my systems and games.… Read More

Ketones and Mitochondria

If you’ve ever wanted to learn more about mitochondria and how they’re affected by the ketogenic diet, I have just the article for you. has an article titled Ketogenic Diet – a connection between mitochondria and diet, written by cardiologist, Dr. Gabriela Segura.

The format of the page isn’t the friendliest and I found myself squinting and adjusting the font size a few times to get it right, but I learned some interesting things that I hadn’t known before.  I already knew that mitochondria are where the Kreb cycle occurs, fats are broken down into energy, and ketones are generated, but that was about it.… Read More

MyPerioPath 8 Month Followup

Slide 1

This past March I referenced a study linking gum disease to Alzheimer’s and concluded that I would just go ahead and get a followup MyPerioPath test done again.

I first came across MyPerioPath when I was exploring the links between gum disease, high cholesterol, and an elevated Lp-PLA2.  As a quick review, the MyPerioPath test is a way to sample the DNA of the oral biome.  It’s a painless test.  Go to the dentist, swish around some saline solution in your mouth for 30 seconds, and spit it out into a test tube.  The test tube gets shipped off and about a week later, you get the results.… Read More

Review of the Rhinomed Mute Nasal Dilator

Rhinomed Mute

I’m going to let you all in on a secret: I’m a snorer.  It’s not something I’m proud of and it’s definitely something I wish I didn’t do, but it is what it is.  I snore.

The BJJ Cavewife has told me that I snored before and I always nodded politely… but since it wasn’t something I could really observe myself, I didn’t really believe her.

There were times when I was just about to fall asleep and she would push my shoulder telling me that I was snoring.  In my mind I was still awake and wasn’t making a peep, so I would just turn away politely if not a little grumpily, and go back to sleep… still not believing her.… Read More

How A Woman Diagnosed Her Own Genetic Mutation – And Saved Two Lives In The Process

Genetic Mutation

One of my best friends has a habit of sending me long articles.  He has this dream job where he seems to have all the time in the world.  I visited him at work once and he has his own office with a big desk and a multi-monitor set up and has people working under him.  It’s kind of a funny thought since I’ve known him since the fourth grade… but then again, I guess it makes sense since he’s one of the smartest and most diligent guys I know.… Read More

Quick Personal Update

Cali 1

It’s been a little quiet here on for the past few months or so and I haven’t had the chance to keep up with my posts because things have been all sorts of crazy.  I wanted to share a brief personal update just to let you guys know what’s been going on.

We Moved Back to California!!!

I grew up in California and did all of my training in California including college, med school, internship, residency, and fellowship.  In 2012 we moved to Cleveland, Ohio to take a job that gave us a lot of time off.  I used the time off to travel with the BJJ Cavewife (the BJJ Cave-Fiance at the time), get married, self-experiment, and start this blog (here’s my first post from 12/12/12).… Read More
